Spooky Music Genres

Staff Writer ranks the six spookiest genres of music

1.Doom metal

Doom metal is characterized as heavy metal with slower tempos, low tuned guitars, and haunting sounds. Instead of feeling pumped up or excited like most metal, you feel dread and impending doom in the words of the vocalist and sounds of the instrument’s thickening beat. There’s only despair and terror in this genre. As gloomy as that sounds, it’s a fascinating genre and hypnotic. Artists include Church Of Misery, Trouble, Woods of Ypres, and The Gates of Slumber

2.Horrorcore

Horrorcore is one of rap’s most controversial subgenres. Mixing hardcore rap and horror themes, the music is intense and hard hitting. Horrorcore songs have been described as “mini horror films on a hip hop beat” and they can certainly scare as well as entertain you. Artists include the Insane Clown Posse, Necro, Twiztid, Esham, and Wolfpac

3.Horror Punk

Misfits are probably the most recognizable band of this genre. With a blend of punk, rockabilly, and themes from horror and sci fi films, horror punk captivates you with both the terrifying and undeniably fun music that it produces. It has stood the test of time as a genre too. You won’t regret dipping your toes into this bizarre world. Artists include The Misfits, Murderdolls, Plan 9, Creeper, and Blitzkid

4.Witch house

This mysterious genre of electronic music blends a variety of electronic sounds like industrial and dark wave to create a unique type of music. The aesthetics of witchcraft and occultism are glued to this genre and the aura of mystery is never lifted with witch house music. It remains one of the smallest subgenres of electronic music but with a devoted following. Artists include Salem, Ritualz, Crim3s, and Crystal Castles

  1. Death metal

The actual genre of death metal is very horror inspired. Cannibal Corpse lead vocalist Corpsegrinder described his band’s music as essentially being mini horror films. Death metal is characterized as gruesome lyrics, distorted instruments, and deep vocals. It remains a top genre of metal and one of its most gloriously terrifying. Some great death metal bands include Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel, Death, Entombed, and Obituary

6.Horror movie soundtracks

If you wanna be scared while listening to music, throw yourself into the belly of the beast and listen to the soundtrack of your favorite horror film. Immerse yourself in the experience. Music is part of what makes the movies so terrifying. Some good ones are the soundtracks to Halloween, Suspiria, Us, The Shining, and Candyman
