Just when you think that campus activities have truly run out of ideas, the Office of Orientation and Student Involvement went and started a nightclub. This ‘Club CNU’ had their debut last friday, with festivities located over at the Ferguson building’s studio room to the theme of a ‘Beach Party’. There wasn’t much to advertise that this was meant to be a beach party, save for some choice decorations at the front. No one was really buying into the theme either, with more people still in their CNU spirit from earlier in the day than sporting Hawaiian shirts or flip-flops.
Still, there’s a lot to like in this event, and in their execution of a cool idea. For one thing, in choosing a great location for a club scene, the atmosphere was on-point. Next, the number of student workers who have to work the event was way down compared to other events like ‘Light the Night’ or the recent ‘Welcome Back’ event, which gives more of the student body a chance to actually attend and enjoy these activities. Finally, the DJ worked the dance floor with expertise, making the ‘club’ feel more alive than it had any right to be.
The event had a pretty dismal turnout for what the space could support, which left the dance floor at the best of times half-full (or half empty). This comes down to its distant walk from most of the campus and the time of day, which can be exhausting or even dangerous for many who might consider attending. Still, it’s also possible that not many people heard about it, considering the limited advertising of this event to emails and a couple fliers in the DSU. The other side of not many from CNU being involved in the production of this event is that there wasn’t anyone motivated in marketing this event.
“I think the event was lit, even though there were only a few people… they should definitely do this event in the future,” said Nalin Theodore, a Sophomore attending the event. He went on to add, “I think the location is perfect… I know it’s not the great lawn, I know it’s not front and center, but it’s a nice area.” Allison Walpert also expressed her satisfaction with the event, “We’re having a blast… I (do) wish there were more people here, but yeah the DJ is fantastic.”
It’s not known when the next edition of CNU Club might appear, or even if it will come back at all. Regardless, this could very easily be a standout semi-regular event for the campus if broadcasted better, as no one interviewed for this article had any problems or issues with Club CNU – only having good things to say.
