CNU Police detained a person trespassing on campus Monday who was allegedly harassing members of the Marching Captains during their rehearsal.
The Captain’s Log spoke with Marching Captain Saul Ronsayro (soph.) on his experience of the event.
“I saw the guy riding his bike alongside that road in the Ferg loop,” Ronsayro said. He went on to say that one of the assistant band directors approached the man, asking him to leave.
According to Ronsayro, this is not the first time the man had been caught loitering around band rehearsals. “We were doing individual stuff with our sections and he went over to, I believe, it was the drumline. He was taking photos of them,” Ronsayro said in regards to a previous time that he recalled seeing the man.
In this specific incident, Ronsayro said the man went up to the band directors stand, claiming they weren’t allowed to have it there. “He started saying ‘you guys are obstructing the roadways’ and ‘this stand isn’t allowed to be here.’”
As the confrontation escalated, CNUPD was called. “Five minutes later the cops showed up and the next thing we know he was getting body slammed to the ground,” said Ronsayro.
Jim Hanchett with the Office of Communication and Public Relations gave The Captain’s Log a university statement regarding the incident.
In the statement, it was mentioned that the person harassing the band was not affiliated with CNU. “CNU Police report the individual did possess a small pocket knife on or about his person but did not use it in a threatening manner,” the statement said.
The suspect was charged with “trespassing, disorderly conduct, obstruction, assault on a police officer, and property damage.”
