Gypsy Rose was recently released at the end of December, 2023, and the internet has gone wild over it. Gypsy Rose grew up with her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard, who falsely claimed that Gypsy suffered from many illnesses, which resulted in a series of unnecessary medical interventions. The truth about Gypsy and her mother came out when Gypsy arranged for her boyfriend at the time to murder Dee Dee in 2015.
There have been multiple movies and series that have capitalized off of her story, which she has recently said she received no profit from. I’m of the opinion that any true crime media about real people shouldn’t be made without the consent of the victims/people involved, which unfortunately is almost never the case. All of this media about her life set Gypsy Rose up to be in the spotlight as soon as she was released.
We’ve seen all kinds of influencers emerge over the last couple years, but Gypsy Rose is sort of the first of her kind. While I think it’s great that Gypsy has been welcomed back into society with open arms, I think it’s strange how quick the internet was to accept her as an influencer. While I believe she was justified and deserves to be happy now, she did still play a part in her mother’s murder. Gypsy herself has talked about how she went about getting out of her situation in the wrong way, and is trying to use her newfound fame to speak out for people who may be in the same situation she was in.
I’ve yet to see her being applauded for speaking out against Munchausen syndrome by proxy, which she suffered from for a long time, very publicly. “Fans” of hers only seem to be interested in the selfies she posts and the tiktoks she makes. It doesn’t seem like people are actually interested in what she has to say. We just like to laugh at and enjoy the irony of Gypsy Rose being a famous influencer now.
So I’m curious to know exactly why her fans are fans of hers. We don’t truly know anything about her, other than all the trauma she’s endured. I’m also curious to find out what will happen when we do find out more about her. What if she slips up and says the wrong thing? What if she has a controversial opinion about something? I don’t know of any influencer who the internet hasn’t turned on just as quickly as they made them famous.
I don’t think that Gypsy Rose shouldn’t be allowed to be famous. It’s a much better alternative for her to share with the world what she chooses to share, rather than other people capitalizing off of her trauma. I just think that her fans have a questionable dynamic with her. I have a lot of empathy for Gypsy Rose–she has never and probably will never have a normal life, and is already having to deal with people’s criticisms and expectations of her. I also know that she is a grown woman who has agency over her life now. So whatever influencer path she chooses to take is her decision, and I hope people will be somewhat graceful towards her.
