On March 23, Gamma Phi Beta hosted their annual philanthropy event Best Dance Crew which supports Girls on the Run, a program that uses physical activity to build social, emotional, and physical skills while encouraging healthy habits that girls can keep with them for the rest of their life. Held in the Fieldhouse, Best Dance Crew is a dance competition between organizations on campus and it is always a highlight of the spring semester. Dozens of students, parents, and community members showed up to cheer and support their favorite team and friends while watching some incredible performances. The theme was Y2K and it was so much fun to take a trip down memory lane and listen to some of the best 2000s tunes that accompanied the dances such as Maneater by Nelly Furtado, Toxic by Britney Spears, and Hips DOn’t Lie by Shakira.
In total, there were twelve groups competing: six sororities, four fraternities, the Ballroom Dance Society, and Alpha Chi Sigma which is the co-ed chemistry fraternity. Gamma Phi Beta started the event with an exhibition dance which definitely set the standard and atmosphere for the rest of the night. Although these girls were not actively competing, they still brought their A game and did not hold back. All of the organizations performed really well and it was obvious that they had truly put in their best effort and had rehearsed often to present their best work. Logan Jenkins, one of the choreographers for Alpha Delta Pi, talked about her experience.
“As a sophomore, I loved being given the opportunity to help choreograph for Best Dance Crew this year! I find it hard to make time to work out between classes, clubs, and my new job so it was great to have a set time to move around during the week! I’ve always loved dancing and it was something I was missing from my college experience. BDC has given me just that! It’s also a great time to bond with other sisters in my chapter who I might not have talked to otherwise. Choreographing was definitely a lot of work and a large time commitment but being able to step on stage and put on a dance that I was a part of creating was such a rewarding feeling!”
There were three judges with one being a CNU Gamma Phi Beta alum and the others being two Girls On the Run staff members. In addition to the top three winners, there were also awards for most fundraised, crowd favorite, and best dressed. Phi Mu won first place with Alpha Phi winning second, and in a surprising turn of events, Sigma Phi Epsilon won third place. Alpha Sigma Alpha raised the most money for Girls On the Run and Kappa Sigma won Crowd Favorite. Finally, Alpha Chi Sigma won Best Dressed which was certainly deserved since they danced in white lab coats and created a full plot that seemed to revolve around a mad scientist. Their dance was undisputedly the highlight of the night and the audience could not stop cheering and screaming for them. Many took to YikYak to express their positive opinions on Best Dance Crew but also to express how impressive Alpha Chi Sigma’s dance was and how they should have won more than Best Dressed.
Gamma Phi Beta never fails to deliver on an electrifying and enjoyable show that brings the whole CNU community together while supporting an important philanthropy that makes an impact in the Hampton Roads.
