Israel-Hamas
Violence in Gaza continues as October 7 marked one year since the Israel-Hamas attacks. NPR reported that several thousands have been killed, several thousands more injured and roughly a million Lebanese civilians have been displaced.
Russia/Ukraine
On October 7, AP News reported a major oil terminal in Crimea was struck by Ukraine’s military on Monday. This oil hub has been a large contributor of fuel for Russia throughout the war. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the war is in a pivotal key phase. Both Russia and Ukraine are experiencing financial strains.
Mayor beheaded in southern Mexico
CBS News reported on October 7, that Chilpancingo mayor Alejandro Arcos was beheaded just a few days after taking office. This has been one of “the latest in a series of attacks on politicians in the violence-plagued Latin American country.” The murder also followed shortly after the murder of another city official, Francisco Tapia.
Escalating violence in Haiti
CNN reported on October 4 that at least 70 people were killed by members of the Gran Grif gang in Haiti. The attack injured at least 16 people, as well as at least 45 houses and 34 vehicles were set on fire. CNN also reported that “The International Organization for Migration said more than 6,000 people had been displaced by the violence.” The Universal Declaration of Human Rights stated that “at least 3,661 people have been killed since January this year” from gang violence.
