At around 10:30 pm on Jan. 18, 2025, TikTok displayed a message stating that their services could no longer be used in the United States per the Supreme Court’s ban. This came as a surprise as the app was not supposed to be banned until two hours later.
TikTok was reinstated less than a day later, with the app claiming that they’re able to be on the market per President Trump’s vow to postpone the ban. While the motives behind why TikTok was banned and reinstated within 24 hours are unclear, this has led people to question the legitimacy of the ban and whether it was a political scheme to distract the American people from the inauguration.
The Captain’s Log will continue to monitor the situation and provide further clarification in later issues of the newspaper as more information is released.
