A tragic accident at a high school track and field event occurred in Colorado Springs that resulted in the death of a spectator. The accident happened when a hammer throw went uncontrolled and struck someone in the stands. This devastating incident happened on Jan. 26 at a meet that was hosted by the Colorado United Track Club at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs.
The victim has been identified as 57-year-old Wade Langston, who was in attendance to support his son, a participant in the event. According to reporters, Langston attempted to shield his wife and son when the 25-pound hammer went beyond the protective netting and struck him in the head. Emergency responders were called to the scene but were unable to save him. He was pronounced deceased on site.
As a result of the accident, the remainder of the track meet was canceled, and authorities have begun an investigation into the safety measures in place during the event. UCCS Chancellor Jennifer Sobanet expressed deep sorrow and emphasized the institution’s commitment to supporting all of those who were affected in a statement given after the accident.
Langston leaves behind a grieving family and community. In the aftermath of the accident, a GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help with his son’s future, symbolizing the community’s strong support while they get through this difficult time.
Fatal accidents during track and field events are rare, resulting in questions being raised about the current safety protocols. The hammer throw event typically features a protective net to contain the heavy, fast-moving device. However, accidents like what happened at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs highlights the need for an ongoing evaluation of safeguards.
The university and event organizers have yet to release any more details regarding this investigation. The local community, friends and family continue to mourn the loss of Langston, honoring his memory.
