No. The brief answer is no she isn’t.
With Super Bowl LIX approaching and the Kansas City Chiefs playing in it, the argument of “Is Taylor Swift ruining the National Football League (NFL)” has reappeared in the media. Considering Swift appears to be there to support her boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs Tight End Travis Kelce, there is little room for speculation that she is directly ruining the NFL.
Even as a Taylor Swift fan, there is confusion around her screen time during Chiefs games. However, I cannot help but be confused about why this is a “Taylor Swift” issue when it appears she is simply supporting her boyfriend.
Who we should be targeting isn’t the famous girlfriend, but rather the NFL for utilizing her presence for monetary gain and an increase in viewership.
A Christopher Newport University student that wished to remain anonymous noted that “her highlights during a game [have shown] core NFL fans that the network’s runtime priorities do not align with the audience anymore.” While I do not agree with the popular belief that Swift is ruining the NFL, I can agree that the NFL is not helping the situation by allowing their public relations team and cameramen to profit off of a person who has nothing to do with athletics aside from a football-player boyfriend.
Furthermore, while I believe the NFL could relax with Taylor Swift/Travis Kelce coverage, there has been a benefit of an uptick in viewership that has aided in allowing more partnerships and has financially benefited the NFL.
My overall opinion of the matter is to just let people have fun! She’s an entertainer… People will be entertained by her presence and find joy in seeing her there. Others will feel differently. There are more pressing matters in this world to hyper-fixate on besides a pop star’s relationship with a football player.
