Our beloved swamp-loving ogre is set to return to theaters on December 3rd, 2026 with a fifth installment of the “Shrek” series. There have already been sneak peaks released on social media platforms sharing the news with fans everywhere.
Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz will reprise their roles as Shrek, Donkey and Princess Fiona. Zendaya has already been announced as playing Shrek and Fiona’s daughter.
DreamWorks CEO, Jeffery Katzenberg decided to end the franchise after the fourth installment of “Shrek: Forever After”, but eventually decided to start working on it again. The first-look cast announcement was released on Feb. 27, 2025, and introduced a new animation style, which updated the characters’ appearances.
As you can imagine, this didn’t sit well with many “Shrek” fans. The issue falls similarly to what happened in 2019 when the live action of “Sonic” was released. Many people were upset with the way that Sonic was depicted and demanded it be changed. Eventually, Paramount Pictures listened to the demands and altered the character design. Similarly, people are calling for DreamWorks to revert the fifth installment of “Shrek” back to its original style.
Either way, many are excited that another installment of “Shrek” is coming back to theaters. While it may take a while until it is released in theaters, we are excited to see where the movie goes. Hopefully DreamWorks is able to look into the animation style before releasing it in December of 2026.
