As a senior, I’ve attended Christopher Newport University’s popular tradition of “Light the Night” for four years in a row. Light the Night is an evening event hosted by the Student Government Association (SGA) and the Campus Activities Board (CAB). The event was held on the Great Lawn in front of Christopher Newport Hall where SGA President Emily Mckenna led the countdown to the glow stick throw. This is to celebrate the first week of classes and the start of a fantastic year at CNU.
As glow sticks were thrown fiercely up in the air, freshmen students were interviewed about their thoughts for their first year of college.
“I am most excited for my psychology classes,” said freshman Ava Reid Kelly.
She also mentioned how excited she was to take classes involving her area of study, psychology. Similar to Kelly, others are excited to dive deeper into their majors as well.
“I’m excited about my business class because I am a business major and am curious about the topics we will be covering in class,” freshman Juliana Camann shared.
Alongside diving deeper into their majors, many freshmen are excited for new opportunities that CNU can bring to them.
“I heard that CNU hosts a pancake dinner in December. I am very excited about that,” said freshman Addyson Rice.
Just like Rice, freshman Steven Bowers is excited to have the opportunity to play football here at CNU.
As well as looking forward to events and opportunities on the horizon, some freshmen are most excited to pick up important life skills.
“I’m hoping that college can make me more outgoing, independent and mature.” freshman Zay Rembert shared.
Freshman Romaro Coplend was also excited to pick up some important life skills.
“I’m very excited to use this opportunity to learn how to be on my own.”
Lastly, freshmen were asked about possible goals they had for this semester, Kelly said she wants to start her career path right away.
“ While I am here, I really want to make sure I am on the right path for my career,” she said. “I’m hoping college can help with that.”
Others are using this opportunity to try something different.
“I am very nervous because college is this new thing to me but I really want to step outside of my comfort zone,” said freshman Ciara Snead.
Whether you are excited about the semester, or are not sure how to feel, Light The Night was a fabulous way to celebrate the start of a new school year and welcome the class of 2029 to campus. Cheers to another great semester and an even better year here at CNU.
