Christopher Newport University (CNU) football kicked off its season opener with a statement win, also celebrating its 25th anniversary since its first season in 2001.
Over 3000 fans were eager for another season of CNU football, and even on a hot September day, the students, alumni and Newport News residents showed their support for their local team.
The Captains took down Trine University 38-7 on a scorching 90-degree Saturday afternoon. CNU started their season just how they drew it up with an amazing passing game and consistent running attack. Connor Barry threw for 5 touchdowns, 0 interceptions and 271 yards. He also earned NJAC Offensive Player of the Week.
Collin Hart had 199 of those receiving yards and 4 touchdowns on the day, helping him be named a part of the D3 football Team of the Week.
Barry’s fifth touchdown strike came in the third quarter when he connected with junior Donovan Woods.
On the ground, running back Jordin Lennon added balance to the offense with 66 rushing yards, consistently picking up key yardage and had a highlight-reel hurdle to steal the spotlight.
Since the opening kickoff, the Captains looked like the dormant team, going into halftime with a 24-7 lead. The team never looked back, scoring another 14 points and holding Trine to 7 rushing yards and 94 passing yards.
CNU looks to keep its momentum on its side as the opening game to a historic season was one to remember. There is always a next game, and the Captains need to stay hot if they want the season everyone is expecting.
With momentum on their side, the Captains (1-0) now turn their attention to the road, where they will travel to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, for a Sept.13 matchup at 1 p.m. against the Bullets. Gettysburg (0-1) is coming off a heartbreaking 31-30 defeat to Juniata and will be eager to bounce back on its home turf.
