First two weeks finished, and still not sure where to print your syllabus? Already forgot about that once-a-week class? Looking for a study nook? Welcome to Odds and Ends. For my first column article, I want to share some information that would have helped me in my first few weeks at CNU. To begin, let’s talk about academics.
Scheduling! The most helpful tool I’ve used while at CNU is Google Calendar. This might seem basic to most readers, but for me, college was my first time using Google Calendar. My crew leader recommended it during orientation, and I can’t thank him enough for that advice! Put your classes there. Add office hours. Meeting times. Study time. Nap time! However you organize your week, having it written down helps you double check your schedule and plan accordingly. Don’t forget to turn on the notifications! That 10 minute heads up might save your attendance grade.
Printing! A lot of professors will ask you to print out your work. It took me a while to figure out where the printers are on campus, so here are the spots I most frequently go to to print my materials:
Trible Library has one of the easiest to find printers, right by the IT help desk. And what’s better, in addition to the convenience of the IT help desk if you have tech problems, Einstein’s is right across the atrium to provide you with that caffeine pump.
Next, the printer on the 2nd floor of the David Student Union is super handy when rushing a print job after lunch. It is located right next to the Harrison room across from the mail room.
As an English major, my most frequently used printer is in good old McMurran Hall room 214. This one is most convenient for me when heading to class, but I caution you to give extra time when printing. This one has been out of paper before, so always be prepared.
Study Nook! When touring CNU, I somehow did not make it over to the back of CNH until Welcome Week. If you did not know, there is a fountain courtyard tucked away behind CNH with benches and rocking chairs that you can use at any time of day or night. It is a great place to do some reading, work on notes before a class, or even just to sit and think. Another “tid bit,” the entrance to the tutoring center is there too! Just take the first left when facing the fountain, and it is the first room down the hallway on the right. The tutoring center is incredibly helpful, don’t be afraid to give it a try if you find you need some extra help.
To all the first year students, welcome to CNU. I wish you all the best as you start this chapter, and become a part of this community of Honor. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, and try new things, and maybe broaden your own horizons by paying a visit to “Odds and Ends.”
