As the weather cools and the summer comes down to an end, I may be too early in my feelings, but I am excited for the Halloween season. I have already started with the horror movie marathons. From ghosts to monsters some of my favorite movies are the eerie psychological thrillers. One film that always has me confused no matter how many times I watch it (a lot) is called Coherence. Inspired by the theory of Schrodinger’s cat, a thought experiment done by Erwin Schrodinger showing the absurdity of quantum mechanics by stating that if a hypothetical cat was placed in a box along with an item that could potentially kill it the cat would be considered to be simultaneously alive and dead. Confusing quantum mechanics aside, it is a great movie (where no cats are harmed) that forces you to watch every moment or be lost in oblivion. Unlike Tenet, where I could not follow along with its objective to confuse me, Coherence is fun to notice clues that you may not have noticed during your previous watch.
So, what is it really about, besides being mind-bending? Coherence follows a group of friends having a reunion dinner on the same night as the passing of Miller’s comet. All seems normal until there are some electrical issues, that is when all mayhem breaks loose. As the friends try to get the power back on, they notice only one house in the neighborhood still has power and they begin to look for answers. However, the more they search for answers the more questions are raised and the more truth is shed of the true drama that is simmering between friends.
Coherence is a fun movie to watch with friends, being able to talk about things you have noticed that your friends may not have fun by yourself if you want to put yourself in a spooky, abstract mood.
