This past weekend, campus was filled with families and friends of our Captains here at Christopher Newport University (CNU). Family Weekend, ranging from Sept. 26 through Sept. 28, is a beloved tradition for families to visit campus – see what their Captain is up to and get involved with various activities.
From tailgating before the football game to cornhole tournaments, the ideal weather for a weekend like Family Weekend would be clear skies and warm breezes. However, dual hurricane Humberto-Imelda had other plans.
Despite the flash flooding and clouds covering the 757, the CNU community didn’t let that stop their good time from rolling.
With preemptive planning, most of the festivities were moved inside to accommodate the disruptions with weather. The Study Abroad fair was moved to Peebles Theatre, Flights Under the Lights moved to the Field House, the President Parent and Family Council Breakfast moved to Peebles Theatre and the Cornhole Tournament was held in the Auxiliary Gym.
Many were concerned the football game may get rained out, but with a little moving around of the schedule, the Captain’s put on an impeccable show.
Clouds and all, the CNU football team secured a 41-27 win over No. 13 ranked team Susquehanna University on Saturday.
The campus grounds were filled with families from all over, close and far.
For junior Micaela Calcagno, her family is local to Virginia Beach. Although she’s not far from home, CNU’s Family Weekend provided a special experience for them to get together. As a member of the sorority of Gamma Phi Beta (GPhi), the Calcagno family joined together for GPhi’s parent’s brunch.
“I’m fortunate that my family isn’t too far, but I’m even more fortunate to have an experience where I get to bring together my family from home and my family here at CNU,” Calcagno said. “Family Weekend will be a memory I cherish forever, these experiences are immeasurable.”
