Newport News bans new vape shops from opening near schools
New vape shops will be subject to recent regulations after the Newport News council approved an amendment to the zoning ordinance on Tuesday, Sept. 23.
Mayor Phillip Jones stated in a press release that the ordinance is about protecting Newport News’ children and families and not to punish responsible businesses. “This action ensures that new vape shops will meet strong community-driven standards.”
The new regulations make it so shops must be located at least 2,000 feet away from childcare centers. They are permitted to operate only from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and may not offer a drive-thru service. Shops are also permitted to operate only in the General Commercial zoning district and cannot have smoked or mirrored windows.
