It’s midway through the spooky season, so here’s some tips and tricks I have found helpful in styling outfits for fall weather. While we’ve had a few warmer days, the colder months are great opportunities for layering, warm styles and accessorizing. Let’s get to it!
In my experience, the most important thing to remember for fall styling is the importance of layering. Especially in this part of Virginia, any given day can start out in the lower 50s and hit 75 degrees by 2:00. Layering your outfit can help you to be prepared for whatever temperature swings come your way. A typical fall outfit for me involves a t-shirt of some sort, a cute fall sweater, and comfortable pants. I recommend having at least one warm piece, and the rest of the outfit being lighter and more breathable in case it warms up, or you get hot when sitting in class. For me, this is usually a jacket or sweater, but sometimes is also a pair of thick cargo pants. I try to either wear a warmer top with thinner bottoms or a light top with warm cozy pants. Having balanced outfits will help to keep you comfortable in the fall weather.
Now let’s talk about colors. I love to take the opportunity in the fall to wear any dark and earthy clothes, my favorites being dark reds and browns. When I think of fall, the first thing that comes to mind is the change in the leaves, and that tends to be my outfit inspiration. One of my personal favorites is my red velvet vest that only ever makes its appearance in the fall. Wearing reds and greens is especially great towards the end of November when the holiday season switches from Thanksgiving to Christmas. Whatever color suits you best, there are lots of ways to make an outfit pop for fall. Cute outerwear like denim or leather jackets, sweaters, hoodies, etc. are great ways to add a splash of color to a neutral outfit.
Another way to make your outfit more fun and fall-like is to accessorise! I personally love adding a hat or scarf to my fall outfits for both functionality and style. Other ideas are leg warmers, gloves, ear muffs, cowls, shawls, etc.—The list is endless! I like to coordinate my hats and shoes if I can, creating a “color sandwich” which gives my outfit a put-together feel. Accessories are a great way to add additional warmth, and a pop to your fall fits.
My favorite outfit hack since coming to college is wearing fleece-lined tights. I discovered freshman year that I am absolutely pathetic when it comes to cold, and I get chilled really quickly. In the past, thick and heavy pants were my go-to when it hit October, but no more! I tried out a pair of fleece-lined tights, and now am comfortable in skirts and shorts well into November and December. These, or even a pair of leggings under baggier pants help to keep the chill out and keep my outfit options open!
