7 tips for election day

Don’t forget to vote!

Election Day is Next Week! CNU will still be holding regular classes throughout the day, so if you intend to cast your ballot on election day, make sure you find some time.

  • Go early

Election day is Tuesday, Nov. 7th. Polling places will be open between 6 AM and 7 PM. Go early rather than later, especially if you have later classes and don’t want to miss dinner! As long as you’re in line by 7PM, you will be able to vote.

  • Research

Know what’s on your ballot and do your research! Your candidates and a mock ballot can be found at https://www.vote411.org.

  • Make sure you’re registered

You can check your registration status and find your polling place at https://www.elections.virginia.gov. If you do not appear in the system and you believe you are registered to vote, contact your local registrar. You can find that contact information at www.elections.virginia.gov/LocalGR.

  • Same Day Registration

If you are not currently registered to vote, same-day registration and voting with a provisional ballot can be utilized even after the Oct. 16 deadline to register to vote a non-provisional ballot. You can same-day register at the office of your general registrar or satellite location during the early voting period. On Election Day, you must go to the polling place for the precinct in which you reside.

  • Need a ride?

There are many organizations in the Newport News area that will offer free rides to the polls on election day. EmPower All is teaming up with North End Cabs to provide free taxi rides to the polls. Anyone who lives from Mercury Boulevard to the downtown waterfront can make a reservation online or by calling North End Cabs at 757-244-4000.

  • Don’t forget your ID!

Acceptable forms of ID include a passport, a drivers license, or a government issued photo ID.

  • Your vote matters!

Smaller elections like these are often decided by a handful of votes. So make time on the day to go out and vote and encourage your friends and family to vote as well. Voting can be a fun little group outing!
