The last couple of days have been quite a whirlwind for social media, especially Instagram and X. With many people leaning towards these apps for news updates and more, there has been an increase in negative material across all platforms. With that being said, while it is important to stay updated and follow the latest news, it’s also important to prioritize your mental health to ensure that the negativity won’t affect you. Here are some tips in order to make sure that the media isn’t negatively affecting your mental health.
- Unplug
The most effective solution to this problem is to simply unplug. I know that can be difficult, given that social media is our biggest gateway to communication. However, even just limiting your time on the app can be helpful. What you see on social media will not go away, but you decreasing your time on social media can reduce the risk of potentially seeing some violent, graphic, or depressing content. I know unplugging can be difficult, but focusing on other communication apps such as messenger or email apps will give you the ability to still communicate with others, while eliminating the desire to scroll through social media.
- Do something that brings you joy
When times seem dark and difficult, doing something that brings you joy can help. For me, I enjoy watching my favorite childhood show or reading a book. Other people find comfort in journaling, going on walks, exercising, hanging with friends, or devoting their time to their hobbies. Regardless of what brings you joy, find something that can occupy your mind, and take advantage of that. Doing things that we love can really help distract us from what is going on in the world and give us that peace of mind we need in the moment.
- Think positive thoughts
Always try to keep a positive mindset. This can be difficult, especially when it feels like the world has been turned completely upside down. Sometimes it’s good to take it one day at a time. Focus on what is going on each day and what you can do to make each day better. Do little things that will keep you having a positive mindset. Buy yourself a coffee at Einsteins. Go shopping. Hang out with that one friend you haven’t seen in a while. Think of something positive and go out and do it.
- Talk to someone
Sometimes we feel like everything is falling apart, and that’s okay. When we are feeling so many things and don’t know what to do with those feelings, all we can do is talk to someone about them. If you are feeling a certain way, and it’s affecting your daily life, make sure you talk to someone about it. It can be anyone. Talk to friends. Talk to family. If you feel that you are struggling, and aren’t sure who to talk to, Christopher Newport University offers counseling in the Freeman Center Monday through Friday. Schedule an appointment with them. Do what you can in order to help you cope with those feelings.
