Multiple Dead After A Large-Scale Russian Attack on Ukraine
Saturday night, Sept 4 into early Sunday morning, Russia launched 50 ballistic missiles, approximately 500 drones, and multiple guided aerial bombs across Ukraine, killing five people according to AP News. Ukrainian officials said that the attack targeted mostly civilian infrastructures. The attack destroyed close to two dozen residential buildings and left around 73,000 households in Zaporizhzhia and the surrounding areas without power. Following the attack on Sunday, Zelenskyy reiterated his call for Kyiv’s Western partners to send additional air defenses to help combat Russia in the future.
The First Parliament In Syria Since The End of The Civil War
Syria chose a Parliament for the first time on Sunday, Sept. 5, since followers of Ahmed al-Shara, the current president, overthrew Bashar al-Assad, marking the end of the civil war, according to The New York Times. The public will not be able to directly vote for lawmakers, but instead, al-Shara will be appointing a third of the 210 members of Parliament directly. Citizens of Syria see it as a step forward after more than five decades of dictatorship, while several citizens believe the vote is unrepresentative and al-Shara’s way of using it to consolidate power. Excluded from voting in the election include a number of minority groups and areas not yet fully under control by the national government, according to The New York Times.
Heavy Rainfall Causes Massive Landslides in Nepalese Villages
Nepal’s government issued a severe rainfall warning for the eastern and central parts of the country from Saturday to Monday. On Sunday, Sept. 5, landslides triggered by the severe rainfall killed at least 44 people in Nepal, with five others reported missing according to AP News. In the eastern mountain district of Illam, whole villages were swept away by these landslides, killing at least 37 individuals and leaving many missing. Helicopters were used to evacuate people in need of medical care, and ground troops were sent to help move people to safer areas. Major highways connecting the Capital, Kathmandu, with other areas were closed by authorities as parts of the highway became blocked by landslide debris.
