The Israeli military announced that it killed Abu Obeida, a spokesperson for Hamas, on Sunday, Aug. 31. Obeida represented Hamas’ Al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing located in the Gaza Strip. Before he was killed over the weekend, Obeida issued a statement after Israel declared Gaza City a “combat zone”. He announced that Hamas militants would do their best to protect living hostages but warned the remains of dead hostages would “disappear forever”. Hamas has not commented on Israel’s confession.
