Peacekeeping mission in Gaza
By the end of June, up to 8,000 troops are expected to be prepared for potential deployment to Gaza as part of a humanitarian and peace mission announced by Indonesia’s military on Sunday, Feb. 15, according to AP News. The Indonesian National Armed Forces has finalized its troop structure and timeline for deployment to Gaza; however, the government has yet to decide when the deployment will take place. In a statement made to The Associated Press, General Donny Pramono said that his troops were ready and could be dispatched on short notice once the government gives approval. Pramono revealed that approximately 1,000 personnel are expected to be deployed as an advance team in April, followed by the rest of the troops in June.
Rally for Iran regime change
Gathered outside of the Munich Security Conference, thousands of protesters demanded regime change in Iran on Saturday, Feb. 15, only a day after President Trump said that a change in government would produce the best outcome, according to the New York Times. Earlier this month, the son of an opposition figure in exile, Reza Pahlavi, encouraged protesters to go to the streets with the hopes of putting pressure on the Iranian government. Friday, Feb. 13, at the Munich conference, Pahlavi made an appeal for American intervention in Iran, according to the New York Times. Along with the demonstration in Munich, large demonstrations also took place across the globe in Athens, Tokyo, and London.
Future Security Concerns in Ukraine
At the Munich Security Conference, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked American and European allies for their support but noted that questions remain regarding Ukraine’s future security, according to AP News. A primary concern involves how U.S. proposed free trade zones would function in the Donbas, especially since Russia insists Kyiv must give up territory for peace. Additionally, Zelenskyy worried that American haste to reach a settlement might lead to signing all agreements simultaneously; in contrast, Ukraine demands that security guarantees be finalized first. Meanwhile, European nations have indicated a willingness to commit troops to ensure security guarantees for the future of Ukraine.
