Unplugging from technology is something that everyone needs to do. A lot of us are so used to having our phones in our hands everyday, including me. It’s a problem that isn’t addressed enough, but for those who want to stay unplugged for a longer period of time, this is what I do to keep my mind occupied and away from my phone.
- Focus on hobbies
One way to stay unplugged for a while is to focus on your hobbies. Hobbies are great because they keep us occupied with things that we enjoy doing. This also helps improve cognitive function, instead of relying on fake dopamine receptors from staring at a screen for long periods of time. If you are still exploring your hobbies or are unsure of what you want to do, try something new and branch out. You never know what you will find interesting!
- Join Offline Club
Another way you can stay unplugged is to join the Offline Club, which is a newer club at CNU. The Offline Club prides itself on doing activities that don’t involve technology, which is very great to get into if you want to stay unplugged for an hour or so. Their organization does all kinds of awesome hands-on-activities so make sure you reach out to them if you are interested in joining.
- Spend time with friends
Spending time with friends is a great way to stay unplugged from your devices. When you are with your friends, you are either talking to them or listening to what they have to say. This means that there is no room for technology to come into play. Not to mention, it is very polite to make sure you are engaging with your friends when you are with them. Hanging out with friends for about 2-3 hours can ensure that you stay unplugged for a while.
- Put your phone in a different room
If you need to get work done but your phone is becoming a distraction, make sure to move your phone to another side of the room. That way, you will feel less inclined to pick it up. I also like to turn off my notifications on my phone so that I don’t hear beeping and feel the need to pick up my phone. If you do these things, then you will be a lot more productive when doing work.
- Go outside and take a walk
Lastly, another thing that you can do is to take walks outside in the fresh air. When I want to step away from technology like my computer or phone, I like to go on walks. My favorite place to take walks is the Noland Trail, which is very scenic. So take this as a sign to unplug and take a walk outside in the fresh air.
I hope that these tips help with making sure you are unplugging from technology throughout the day. Remember, this doesn’t mean that you can’t use your phone at all, but remember that spending time away from your phone can help you feel so much better physically and mentally. I hope everyone has a great rest of their week and an amazing weekend. Stay safe Captains!
