In a life filled with social media and being influenced from every direction, finding out what you want to follow vs. not follow can be hard. The grey areas, the uncertainty, and the blurred lines of what counts as ‘worth it’ or ‘fake’ can get tricky. However, these are some of the influences I believe are definitely not worth following or believing.
- Hustle culture
Constantly being busy and having something to do can start to burn you out over time. While rest may feel like you’re being ‘lazy’ or ‘unproductive,’ it really isn’t. It’s essential, in fact. The body needs rest and recovery time in order to fuel back up for activities. Those who claim they never rest or claim they don’t need it, are either lying or don’t recognize their body’s signs of need for rest!
- Cutting it out completley
This particular narrative goes for many things. The one area that I’ve seen it prevail most is in diet culture. When people go on diets, they tend to want to cut out certain foods or food groups completely. However, this most of the time fails for a few reasons. One, the more you deny yourself something, the more your psyche will crave it. Instead try moderation and slowly waning it out or only eating it in small amounts. Also, life is short! A small piece of cake at a birthday party isn’t going to kill you. Enjoy it and move on!
- One size fits all
Influencers love to say ‘try x and it’ll work 100%” or “x is SURE to change your life.” In reality, that method of whatever it is will probably only work 50% of the time for 10% of their viewers. I’m not talking about ‘walk to get your steps in’ or generic things like that. I’m talking about the people who tell you these absurd and niche things to do to reach some goal. Take these tips from these influencers with a grain of salt. Everyone is different and everyone’s bodies and lives require different needs. It’ll take a few attempts to find out what you need!
