Christopher Newport University’s (CNU) top-ranked women’s field hockey team closed its regular-season home schedule with two commanding victories, defeating St. Mary’s College of Maryland and Rowan University at Jennings Family Stadium. Across both contests, the Captains displayed cohesion, poise, and balanced offense while celebrating the leadership of their graduating seniors.
Commanding Win over St. Mary’s
Against St. Mary’s on Oct. 22, the Captains produced one of their most complete performances of the season, securing a 7-1 win. CNU struck early when Riley Iasiello converted a pass from Courtney Hughlett to open the scoring. Maintaining possession for much of the quarter, the Captains held St. Mary’s without a single shot in the opening 15 minutes.
Momentum continued in the second quarter as Lindsey Loar extended the lead with an assist again from Hughlett. By halftime, CNU had registered six shots and appeared in full control of field position.
The third quarter marked a breakthrough stretch, with goals from Iasiello, Avery Mast and Emily Evans off a deflection by Loar. The attack’s precision and movement overwhelmed St. Mary’s defenders, producing three goals in a single period. In the final quarter, Caroline Hughlett scored twice, sealing the team’s 7-1 win and maintaining its position atop the national Division III rankings.
Head coach Lindsay Moura praised her team’s discipline and consistency, emphasizing that reaching the No. 1 ranking serves as both validation and motivation. Moura noted that “the challenge now is staying there and continuing to execute.”
She also encouraged her players to keep pressing offensively while sustaining their defensive focus heading into postseason play.
Iasiello highlighted the team’s preparation and composure, stating that focusing on the press during practice helped generate sustained offensive rhythm.
She described playing under pressure as “a privilege,” expressing pride in how the team thrives with expectations attached to its national standing.
Senior Night Triumph against Rowan
Just three days later, CNU honored seniors Emily Evans and Lily Kerr during their final home appearance. Evans entered the game ranked 11th in school history for shooting percentage and 12th in total goals, while Kerr, a two-time All-American, holds the program record for career shutouts and ranks among the top goalkeepers in NCAA Division III history.
Facing a nationally ranked Rowan squad, CNU once again relied on structure and patient buildup. The Captains controlled possession early and broke through when Lindsey Loar scored on a deflection during a penalty corner. Maintaining relentless pressure, Loar completed a hat trick by halftime, each goal the product of sharp ball movement and unselfish passing from teammates including Courtney Hughlett.
CNU’s defense, anchored by Kerr, held Rowan to only four shots on goal. The backline’s communication and disciplined spacing neutralized offensive threats throughout the match. The Captains’ 3-0 win reflected both tactical preparation and the unity that has defined their season.
Following the victory, Moura expressed gratitude for her seniors’ contributions. She described Evans and Kerr as “amazing people both on and off the field” whose impact on the program will be remembered for years to come. Reflecting on the team’s continued success, she noted that there is “always room for improvement” but credited her players for sustaining excellence and composure through each challenge.
Looking Ahead
With these wins, CNU concluded its regular-season home schedule on a high note, combining dominant offense with elite defensive execution. The Captains now turn their focus toward the conference tournament, where they will seek to maintain their No. 1 national ranking and continue building on a season defined by leadership, resilience, and championship-level consistency.
