The Christopher Newport University (CNU) Captains remain undefeated again! Last weekend, the CNU Football team secured a close win against rival Salisbury University (SU) by a score of 45-42 on Nov. 8, clinching the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) championship.
Prior to Saturday’s game, both CNU and SU were undefeated with records of 8-0. The game determined who would secure a spot in the NCAA tournament.
TowneBank Stadium was sold out with 4563 “Code Blue” fans waving signs and posters honoring the team’s Senior Night.
At halftime, the CNU Marching Captains put on a showstopping performance to end the season.
The momentum of the game remained relentless out the gate. With constant back and forth, the Sea Gulls put up a hard fight.
Soon into the first quarter, Salisbury’s Andre Matthews landed a 13 yard touchdown followed by a kick from Tucker Smack, putting the Gulls in the lead by 7-0.
The Captains quickly leveled the playing field with a touchdown by Josh Powell from a nine yard pass from Connor Barry, cemented by a kick from Johnathen Gates.
The remainder of the game persisted in a tug-of-war for points.
By the end of the fourth quarter, Salisbury tried relentlessly to come back by scoring a touchdown, but CNU wasn’t letting up any more points.
With an impressive win securing the NJAC championship, the captains will travel to Ewing, New Jersey to take on the College of New Jersey on Friday, Nov. 14.
