GOOD NEWS! The harmful act of littering is now being turned into a new and purposeful mission! Ian Falconer, a fisherman from England, saw a new purpose for nylon fishing nets that have been discarded in the ocean. The average fisher will replace his/her net every six months, leaving room for them to be left in the ocean, in a landfill or being burned. This can lead to pollution or possible strangulation of ocean wildlife.
However, Falconer has created a method to ensure less of this happening. Falconer uses the material from the fishnets to turn it into raw plastic again. He uses said plastic for a 3D printer, which he uses to make anything that the mind can imagine. “The beauty of it is that it all fits in a shipping container and pretty much anyone can operate it. So you can have one of these at every harbor around the world, converting a costly and hazardous waste into a profitable raw material,’ Falconer said.
