Three teams. Three titles. One amazing weekend for Christopher Newport University (CNU) athletics. One of the biggest games of the year for CNU football was a top-15 matchup between #7 Salisbury and #13 Christopher Newport; the winner would claim the New Jersey Athletic (NJAC) Conference title.
The Captains would remain undefeated (9-0) and move up to # 8 in the nation after a hard-fought 45-42 victory over Salisbury. The Captains would claim their second NJAC title in school history, and look to complete their historic regular season when they travel to play The College of New Jersey, aiming for their first undefeated season ever.
The women’s soccer team wasn’t too far behind the morning after at 10:00 AM. The 14-ranked Captains would beat UC Santa Cruz in a nail-biting match that remained 0-0 up until Molly Seventko scored the game-winning goal in overtime to give CNU their second conference championship of the weekend. The Captains will also host the first and second rounds of the NCAA playoff bracket starting on Nov. 15, where they face Penn State Harrisburg. Rowan will play Misericordia at 7:00 PM, concluding the first game.
To top the weekend off, men’s soccer kicked off following the women’s victory. The men would go on to play a hard-fought game as well versus the gulls of Salisbury. The score remained tied, 0-0, going into halftime, but in the 77th minute of regulation, Caleb Jones of CNU broke the tie and scored the lone goal of the game, giving the Captains their third conference title of the weekend.
