GOOD NEWS! The UK government has set out to plan the eventual end of animal testing. It is described as a ‘significant step forward’ for both science and animal welfare. As far as safety tests on animals are concerned, the plan aims to end these tests by the end of 2025. It also aims to reduce 35% of the use of dogs and primates in medicinal tests by the end of 2030! The UK government wants to accomplish this by introducing new technologies that can advance science without the use of testing on animals. These new technologies include organ-on-a-chip devices that mimic human organs which allows the study of physiological processes from medicine without causing harm to animals. “Every day, we are seeing more breakthroughs with technologies like organ-on-chips, organoids, and computer modelling. These can enable better science to be done, without using and harming animals,” Barney Reed said, senior science and policy manager at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
