The wait for Christopher Newport University (CNU) students and staff is over as the university reveals its new Science and Engineering Research Center (SERC). Serving as a space for student research, innovation and experimental learning, SERC provides a new vessel for CNU to expand its science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) departments.
The building’s primary areas of studies focus on physics, computer science, information science, cybersecurity, engineering, kinesiology and neuroscience. Equipped with specialized classrooms and laboratories, SERC is one of the most technologically advanced academic facilities in the state of Virginia.
Unveiled to the public with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Jan. 10, the new 83,000-square-foot building was put on display to tour the state-of-the-art labs, maker spaces and the two-story drone lab.
“This is a building that serves everyone at CNU and I, we, are committed to ensuring it serves the Hampton Roads region through the research, learning and the programming that will take place right here,” President William Kelly stated at the ribbon cutting ceremony.
