GOOD NEWS! Hari Budha Magar became the first double above-knee amputee to climb the highest peaks on all seven continents; a feat that only 500 people in history have ever achieved. Magar, a world record breaking mountaineer, battled vicious Antarctic winds and freezing temperatures with his team to reach the top of Mount Vinson earlier this January.
Magar lost both his legs in 2010 to an IED in Afghanistan while serving with the British Army’s Gurkha regiment.
His summit journey started in 2018 when he applied to climb Mount Everest, but was denied by Nepali authorities who banned climbers with a disability. However, after challenging and overturning the ruling, Magar stood on top of Everest four years after his accident.
He is determined to demonstrate that with the right support, boundaries can be transcended for people of all abilities.
“Losing my legs was devastating. Harder than you can ever imagine,” he said in an interview. “Yet through the dark, disappointment and loss of self-worth in the world, I was given support and love to find a way through.”
