Eleven years ago, in Glendale, Arizona, a single goal-line interception changed the course of NFL history and rewrote record books. Now the rematch that all Seattle fans have been waiting for has finally arrived. Will Sam Darnold and the Seahawks be able to reclaim their title, or will Drake Maye continue the legacy that Tom Brady had started and win the Patriots their record-setting seventh Super Bowl?
With Super Bowl Sunday coming up in less than a week, fans are gearing up for a rematch that is sure to be remembered. The Seattle Seahawks are led by quarterback Sam Darnold, who was recently traded from the Minnesota Vikings to the Seahawks in 2024. After the trade he has completely changed what Seattle looks like after their brutal 2015 loss to the Patriots in the Super Bowl and brought them back to the top of the NFL.
Along with Darnold, Jaxson Smith-Njigba, a star wide receiver from Ohio State, leading the NFL with receiving yards, and Cooper Kupp lead the passing game, and with help from Kenneth Walker III on the ground, the Seahawks offense looks unstoppable. It was no surprise that Seattle got the first-round bye in the playoffs and finished first in the NFC West with a 14-3 record.
Coming off a hard-fought 31-27 win in the NFC Conference Championship against the Los Angeles Rams. The Seahawks look to continue their momentum that started in the Divisional round, where they crushed a very injured San Francisco 49ers team, 41-6, and carry that into Sunday.
The New England Patriots have a very similar story. After Tom Brady left to go play for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Patriots fans were left wondering if they would ever be back to even playoff contention. But led by quarterback Drake Maye, star wide receiver Stefon Diggs, and cornerback Christian Gonzalez, the New England Patriots have star power all around them.
With their help from their talent, they have consistently been good throughout the entire regular season and into the playoffs. The Patriots finished first in the AFC East but second in the AFC, right behind the Denver Broncos, whom the Patriots would end up beating in the Conference Championship 10-7.
Now, eleven years later in San Francisco 49ers stadium, the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots are facing off once again. According to FanDuel, the Seahawks are favored by 4.5 points, the Patriots are +194 to win the game, and the over, under line is at 45.5 points. The Patriots are used to being the underdog though, they were 4-2 when they were not favored but the Seahawks are 6-1 when favored during the regular season.
This game is going to be one for the record books, no matter who comes out the victor. But the main matchup Sunday night will be how the Patriots can guard Seattle’s passing game and if Christian Gonzalez can shut down Jaxon Smith-Njigba. If he can, the Patriots have a huge shot at becoming the NFL’s first, seven time Super Bowl Champions.
