With the official start to the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy, things are already heating up and we haven’t even crossed the halfway point in competition. From record-breaking performances to unexpected upsets, the Games have delivered plenty of storylines that fans won’t forget anytime soon.
The 2026 Winter Olympics opened with a truly one-of-a-kind celebration. For the first time in Olympic history, the opening ceremony took place simultaneously in multiple locations. Events were held at San Siro in Milan, as well as in Livigno, Predazzo, and Cortina d’Ampezzo.
As soon as the games started, athletes immediately began putting on a show for the world. The host team, Italy, etched its name into the country’s record books, recording the country’s most medals in a single Olympic day with six podium finishes.
There have already been five Olympic records broken, and many more look to be broken in the next couple of weeks. The US is currently holding seven medals, two of them being gold, and sits at fifth in team scoring.
The United States still has a lot to accomplish if they look to get back into contention with number one Norway and its impressive twelve medals, six of them being gold. The US look to continue their dominance on the ice in women’s ice hockey, after beating Finland in a shutout victory, the US looks to continue their streak and take home another gold.
The Winter Olympics run through February 22, with more medals, nail-biting races, and unforgettable moments still to come. Events like men’s and women’s downhill skiing, figure skating finals, biathlon battles, and curling showdowns are all on the horizon—and this year’s Games have already shown that surprises are always around the corner.
