As spring slowly begins to make its descent across the land, music helps to bring our lives to vibrance as our hearts bloom in tune with the flowers. With the arrival of spring comes the arrival of new beginnings, new romances and even new tunes to keep your head high and your soul caught in a rhythm. No matter your ears’ specific taste, there’s a lovely melody calling your name.
Harpy Hare by Yaelokre: Happy hair is a folky song with a chorus of voices that instantly entrances you, transporting you to a realm of magic with fairies as you frolic through the forest. With a flowing rhythm that not only keeps you intrigued and lightens your soul. The lyrics offer a direct contrast to the upbeat tune of the song, as the lyricism follows a theme of melancholy. This song with its powerful sound is perfect for a windows down road trip to the beach with friends or a picnic in the park.
The Giver by Chappell Roan: Offering a contrast to her popular songs such as “Pink Pony Club” and “Hot To Go” this song offers a much more raunchy southern twist to the usually glam popstar. Keeping with the obviously queer themes, this song is not only perfect as the bitter chill begins to fall but as summer comes hand in hand with pride month.
Venus by Shocking Blue: With a slight twang yet drenched in main character energy, this song mixes old rock such as the beatles with modern pop into an alternative song that can appeal to a vast majority of people in an array of age groups. The song is perfect for your walk to Einstein’s to get a coffee, or the drive home to see your home town friends.
Good Girl by Paris Paloma: It simply cannot be a list of song recommendations without my all time favorite feminist musician, Paris Paloma. Contrary to Paloma’s previous single “Good Boy” that attacks the patriarchy from its most vulnerable place, the insecurities of men. This song encapsulates the insecurities of women and how the bodies we have been given are too quickly put up for ridicule. The beautiful melody offers the listener a sense of sanctuary and magic while speaking about important topics. The song is a beautiful work of art that is made to speak up and empower women.
As we bid adieu for the spring break willed with fun rest and music I look forward to seeing the rest of you when we return. With peeling sunburns tan lines freckles and grins I hope to see every student enjoying whatever tune finds the rhythm of your heart this spring.
