Alabama rules frozen embryos are children

The Alabama Supreme Court ruled frozen embryos are considered children on Friday Feb. 16, BBC reported. The Alabama state House ruled, “Any fertilized human egg or human embryo that exists outside of a human uterus is not considered an unborn child or human being for any purposes under state law.”

The ruling comes after an incident in December 2020 when a patient accidentally dropped embryos after entering the fertility clinic, according to Johns Hopkins.

This has caused multiple fertility facilities to pause IVF treatments over concern of legal risk, according to CNN. Starting in 2022, four states have amended their constitutions to protect access to abortion, and several others are considering doing so, AP news reported.
