Why the parking garage is not your trash can

I frequently visit East Campus to hang out with my boyfriend and friends and recently, I’ve been appalled by the amount of trash found in the parking garage. I’m honestly not sure how the other parking garages around campus look, but the one that I frequently visit makes me upset. There are so many pieces of garbage that have been there since the start of the semester, such as moldy food containers, a smashed pumpkin and many plastic water bottles. Unfortunately, these items will never disappear from the parking garage unless they are thrown out, which is why there should be rules put in place in order to keep our parking garages clean and safe.

First, I think we need to properly educate people on how to throw garbage away. The build up of garbage in the parking garages is only getting worse and worse over time and needs a solution in order to prevent more trash from accumulating. If you have trash in your car that you need to throw away, please don’t throw it on the ground in the parking garages. Find the nearest trash can, either outside or in the residence halls and throw it away there.

Secondly, a more long term solution would be to implement trash cans in the parking garages. These trash cans can be placed by the walkways and stairs so that people who pass by will feel the need to toss their trash away in the trash cans and not on the ground. This would help the accumulation of trash in the parking garage decrease.

Lastly, this issue is something that is easily overlooked. People do not see all the trash in the parking garages until they get out of their car and almost step in it. If people start to throw their trash away properly and CNU starts to implement trash cans in the parking garages, our garages would end up cleaner and more appealing to those who live here or visit. As for the trash that is currently in the parking garage, I’m hoping people will start to come together and clean up the trash that they see.
