Q: How should I prepare for move out day?

Being a sophomore here at Christopher Newport University, I have only ever moved out once during my time here. I can say for sure that move out day is one of the most stressful times ever. Not only do you have to move out of your dorm at a given time, but you also have to find a way to transport your stuff as well as being able to pack in a small amount of time. Here’s three important tips that will make your move out day run as smoothly as possible.

  • Start with a Plan

Planning can sometimes be an absolute nightmare, however, for situations like this, having a plan is so important. The first thing that I did when I moved out freshman year was finding out what day I had to move out by. From there, I called my mom and we arranged a time where she could help me move all my stuff out and take it home with me. Trust me when I say this, this is not something you want to do at the last minute, as it is a long process of moving out.

  • Move out boxes and labels

Trust me when I say this, but you will feel so much better if you take the time to buy move out boxes and labels. While it might be a pain to put things away, label each box and transport them, your job will be so much easier when everything is sorted in the correct bin. For example, putting all electronics in one bin or putting clothes in another, while making sure to label each box. This will save you so much time when unpacking and putting everything away in your home.

  • Get enough sleep

I cannot stress enough how important sleep is the day before moving out. Moving out will not just take a lot of physical strength but also mental strength. It would be a good idea to make sure you are well rested so that you don’t burn out in the middle of packing or even lose motivation to pack.

As we reach the end of the semester, there will be so much going on. Save yourself stress and make sure to have a plan prepared to make move out week run more smoothly. I hope that finals go well and Claire’s Corner will see you again next semester.
