This past Monday night, the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards took place after it was postponed due to the writer’s strike. However, the wait was definitely worth it as TV’s biggest night of the year came with many incredible achievements and many heartfelt and hilarious moments as well.

Comedian and actor Anthony Anderson hosted and many stars came up to present awards for the night such as Christina Applegate who received a standing ovation, mostly due to her open struggle with Multiple Sclerosis. A huge victory occurred for Elton John who achieved something only a few others in the entertainment industry had: an EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony). He won for Outstanding Variety Special (Live) with his show Elton John Live: Farewell from Dodger Stadium. The only problem was he was not present at the ceremony to accept his Emmy so producer Ben Winston accepted it in his absence.

Many actors became first Emmy award winners with Ayo Edebiri for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, Steven Yeun for Lead Actor in a Limited  or Anthology Series or Movie, and Jeremy Allen White for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. The two shows that swept the Emmys were Succession for the category of drama which won six and The Bear for the category of comedy that also won six in addition to four Creative Arts Emmys collected on January 6.

Quinta Brunson had a historic win as she became the first black woman in more than thirty years to win Best Actress in a Comedy for her work in Abbott Elementary. “I love making ‘Abbott Elementary’ so much and I am so happy to be able to live my dream and act out comedy,” Brunson said as she fought through tears during her acceptance speech.

Other highlights of the night included a Greys Anatomy reunion with Ellen Pompeo, Chandra Wilson, Justin Chambers, Katherine Heigl and James Pickens Jr. who announced that their show officially became the longest running primetime medical drama in television history. There also seemed to be a jumpscare of the night with a constant appearance of someone dressed head to toe as a free goblin but it turned out to be Princess Poppy from Season 15 of RuPaul’s Drag Race.

Overall, the Emmy Awards were a huge success with many tears and deserved wins and no controversial jokes that were at the Golden Globes. Entertainment’s award season is still only just beginning with the Grammy’s on February 4 and the coveted Academy Awards on March 10.
